The Birds of Faia Brava

    The Reserve

Located in the Coa Valley, along the border of Guarda District, the Faia Brava Reserve covers about 1000ha of land in the municipalities of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo and Pinhel. In this sector, the steep slopes of the river are formed by granite outcroppings and cliffs, a good habitat for the cliff-breeding birds. This area is inserted in the Coa Valley SPA (Natura 2000) and IBA (Birdlife International Important Bird Area) and, finally, in the Archaeological Park of the Coa Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2010 the Faia Brava Reserve was classified by the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Institute (ICNB) as the first private protected area of the country and is also currently a pilot area of the European project Rewilding Europe, for the creation of wild natural areas and for the development of nature tourism in Europe.

Griffon and moon from our hide

From our hide's window we have the opportunity to observe the approaching of the vultures, having several ways of photographing them in flight. In some special times of the year, we get the moon visible in the morning sky, just in front of us. You just have to wait for that moment when a vulture [...]

            Black Kite at our hide

Diving to steal A Black Kite drops down to steal a piece of food just in front of our hide's window. Instead of searching for food on the ground, it prefers to take pieces in flight and eat them still flying or perched on a tree, away from the scavenging confusion. More information about our [...]

            Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus)

            Photo moments through our hide

Griffon vultures drinking water One of the most interesting photo moments we get through our hide for vultures. On warmer days, the vultures do not refuse the water we use to fill the natural cavities of the rock. After a fast meal, nothing better than water to push down the food. More information about our [...]

            Hide for vultures almost operational

We have started testing the new hide for vultures, at Faia Brava Reserve. The Egyptian vultures arrived already to the territory and we've been getting some Griffon vultures regularly in the feeding station. But now, with the hide finished, we're analising all the details while using the structure.  During the last couple of weeks we've [...]

            Faia Brava Landscapes

At Faia Brava Reserve we see a wild landscape, formed by large rounded blocks, scattered at random. This chaos of blocks was formed over time through the influence of the elements that led to the wear of large granite masses. It is in this landscape that the Côa river opens its way and, when entering [...]
