Discover the wild heart of central Portugal on a guided botanic adventure in Serra da Estrela Natural Park. A majestic landscape where rugged peaks, glacial-scored rock faces and high-altitude plateaus make this the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal.
With the expert guidance of a local naturalist, you’ll explore a unique mosaic of mountain habitats. From rocky outcrops and open moorlands to forested valleys and swift mountain streams, where this special place fosters endemic flora found nowhere else in the country.
There is a wide variety of plants and flowers that lend their color to the paths and slopes of the mountain. Like the animals, some elements of the botany only survive in this mountainous territory. The highest ground of Estrela presents pseudo-alpine features and therefore the vegetation is mostly formed by small-sized plants, shrubs and creeping plants like the Juniper (Juniperus alpina) and grasses such as Festuca henriquesii and Nardus stricta, plants adapted to the adverse weather of winter with a regular coverage of snow. The Campanulla herminii, a beautiful blue flower that is associated with altitude pastures and the Silene foetida subsp. foetida, bloom during the summer months. But since the middle of winter and early spring we can see several species of daffodils (some are Iberian endemisms) and the Fritillary (Fritilaria nervosa). In wetter areas, we can still find the tiny Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) a carnivorous plant.
The experience is thoughtfully organised: you’ll be accompanied by a specialized guide, provided with local transport, and you’ll traverse part on foot and part by vehicle, making it accessible even if you’re not an avid hiker. A half-day or full-day option is available, and (if you wish) the tour can include a picnic, letting you enjoy the mountain scenery at leisure.
Whether you’re a passionate botanist or simply someone who appreciates nature at its most dramatic, this guided journey through Serra da Estrela offers a rare opportunity to connect with Portugal’s wild heart, where altitude, solitude and biodiversity come together in a single, unforgettable experience.
