Fed by the stream of Tour\u00f5es, it formed one of the largest water surfaces in the whole C\u00f4a Valley, being distributed in a great diversity of environments such as ponds, channels, permanent and temporary ponds, interconnected by seasonally flooded wetlands and full of aquatic and riparian vegetation that grows over the old tungsten and inerts extraction areas. Around all this water, there is an abundance of willow woods, some areas of reed beds, as well as a young but extensive forest, mainly composed of Pyrenean Oak (<em>Quercus pyrenaica<\/em>) and Holm Oak (<em>Quercus rotundifolia<\/em>).<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;30px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;15023&#8243; img_size=&#8221;400&#215;265&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow_3d&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;30px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;14415&#8243; img_size=&#8221;400&#215;265&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow_3d&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;30px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;15601&#8243; img_size=&#8221;400&#215;265&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow_3d&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;30px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A refuge for biodiversity<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Despite its recent past, Paul de Toir\u00f5es is an area that is already of great importance for biodiversity, with important communities of aquatic flora and fauna, including the European Pond Terrapin (<em>Emys orbicularis<\/em>), the Mediterranean Terrapin (<em>Mauremys leprosa<\/em>), the Otter (<em>Lutra lutra<\/em>), a nesting colony of Grey Heron (<em>Ardea cinerea<\/em>), as well as a breeding pair of Marsh Harrier (<em>Circus aeruginosus<\/em>), flocks of Mallard (<em>Anas platyrhynchos<\/em>) and Teal (<em>Anas crecca<\/em>), Green Sandpiper (<em>Tringa ochropus<\/em>), Snipe (<em>Gallinago gallinago<\/em>). Both the White Stork (<em>Ciconia ciconia<\/em>) and the Black Stork (<em>Ciconia nigra<\/em>), can be seen here, regularly, searching for food or shelter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>An oasis for birds<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The area is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/portugal\/hotspot\/L10452810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>hotspot<\/em> <\/a>for birds, with more than 100 species already observed, being frequented by several species of birds of prey, with the confirmed occurrence of Black Kite (<em>Milvus migrans<\/em>), Red Kite (<em>Milvus milvus<\/em>), Short-toed Eagle (<em>Circaetus gallicus<\/em>) Booted Eagle (<em>Hieraaetus pennatus<\/em>), Common Buzzard (<em>Buteo buteo<\/em>), Griffon Vulture (<em>Gyps fulvus<\/em>), Black Vulture (<em>Aegypius monachus<\/em>), Egyptian Vulture (<em>Neophron percnopterus<\/em>),&nbsp;Sparrowhawk (<em>Accipiter nisus<\/em>) and, occasionally, Golden Eagle (<em>Aquila chrysaetos<\/em>). But also observed here are the Bee-eater (<em>Merops apiaster<\/em>), the Iberian Magpie (<em>Cyanopica cooki<\/em>), the Hoopoe (<em>Upupa epops<\/em>), the Woodchat Shrike (<em>Lanius senator<\/em>), the Raven (<em>Corvus corax<\/em>), the Western Orphean Warbler (<em>Curruca hortensis<\/em>), the Kingfisher (<em>Alcedo atthis<\/em>), the Sand Martin (<em>Riparia riparia<\/em>), the Great Reed Warbler (<em>Acrocephalus arundinaceus<\/em>), among many others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Among the group of mammals, the Otter (<em>Lutra lutra<\/em>), the Red Deer (<em>Cervus elaphus<\/em>), the Roe Deer (<em>Capreolus capreolus<\/em>), the Red Fox (<em>Vulpes vulpes<\/em>), the Badger (<em>Meles meles<\/em>) and the Wild Boar (<em>Sus scrofa<\/em>), are the most frequent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Rewilding<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This is also a rewilding area, where the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/rewilding-portugal.com\/pt\/oeste-iberico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rewilding Portugal<\/a> is implementing ecological restoration actions to make the Greater C\u00f4a Valley a place where natural processes and complete trophic chains play key roles in the landscape.
